Angular Shards Instead of Spheres

Garnet shards are not beads. Where a spherical bead crushes a sample between two surfaces, an angular shard cuts and tears it, which is a better match for fibrous and structured material that a sphere simply pushes aside.

The shards are acid washed and supplied loose in a 250 g bottle, to be dosed into the tube alongside or instead of spherical beads.

In practice they are often combined with a bead: the shards attack the structure, the beads finish the lysis. That combination is worth trying on soil, plant material and anything with a fibre running through it.
